THE HISTORY OF
What was once a small mining town has sprouted into something quite different. If original residents of Lafayette could return, they most likely wouldn’t recognize it! The couple who first mined the land was Mary Elizabeth Miller and her husband Lafayette. They bought their farm of 240-acres in 1868 and dug mine shafts that produced roughly 1,000 tons of coal per day. When the town was officially formed in 1890, it was the coal mining center of Boulder County.
