THE HISTORY OF
SUPERIOR, COLORADO
Located on the southeast side of Boulder, the town of Superior has seen magnificent changes since it’s coal mining days. Superior was settled in 1861 by William C. Hake, a farmer who discovered coal on his land. He is said to have claimed there was “none superior in the state,” giving birth to the name of the town!
During Superior’s peak, there were over 400 residents, a church, school, stable, general store, barbershop, several pool halls, three saloons, and two boarding houses. The town suffered immensely when the Industrial Mine closed in 1945, which employed over 200 people. In 1950, only 250 individuals remained in the town. Today, there are 12,000 residents who enjoy gorgeous open space and benefit from the residential and commercial property developments.
